Ada Bojana Island is a naturist paradise on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro.
Sandwiched by the two branches of the Bojana River on its mouth to the Adriatic Sea is fabulous Ada Bojana Island. Located on the southernmost tip of Montenegro, near Ulcinj town, it has become a naturist paradise, well known in Europe.
I was there several years ago and I had such a great time. The naturist resort is nested in an almost tropical setting, on a sandy beach. There is also a small camp for tents.The island is a mix of sea and river, saltwater reeds and willows and sea algae. The beach is great, clean, with nice restaurant/bar and generally good infrastructure. It is definitely not developed like modern Croatian or French resorts, but this is not a downside at all. You feel almost in Cuba, only the palms are missing! Truth to be told, the resort was outdated, built in a socialist style and has seen its prime during Yugoslavia, but still OK.
Charms of Ada Bojana
All this inconveniences fade faced with the charms. Beside the beautiful beach, the nature and isolation is main attraction. I walked on evenings completely naked to the second Bojana branch, that makes makes a border between Montenegro and Albania. This is a long stretch, maybe a kilometre or two with rolling sand dunes. This was great for relaxation and many people meditate alone on a balmy evening sun and fresh breeze from the sea.
I met many people, from entire Europe and former Yugoslavia, mostly families, also surprised to see lots of young couples.
Textile on the island?
I heard that recently, textile people are coming to the island (the resort covers only a part of the island’s beach). This is a big let down and much of the charm would be lost, if this is true. There is a 10km long beach to Ulcinj and I don’t see the reason to spoil this naturist gem.
Still, I am looking forward to visit it again. Maybe even this summer 🙂
